2009 Bantam AAA Bears and Vipers Tryouts

The Bantam AAA Vipers won the Provincial Bantam Baseball Championship, the National Championship and formed the core of the Vancouver Island team that won the Gold Medal at the BC Summer Games! 2008 was truly a good year for the Vipers and now preparations have started for the 2009 season for a new team of Vipers and their younger cousins, the Bantam Bears.

The preliminary tryouts for the Bantam Vipers and the Bantam Bears baseball teams are coming up. The Vipers are a greater Victoria all star team comprised of players who are 14 years of age as of December 31, 2008 (born in 1994). The All Star Bears are 13 years old as of December 31, 2008 (born in 1995). Following indoor training in January and February, Vipers and Bears compete in a full-season Bantam program that stretches from April through August.

Prospects for the 2009 Vipers and Bears need to attend two of three of the first round of the tryouts scheduled for their age group:

Vipers Tryouts (DOB = 1994):

Sept. 18 (6:30 pm); Sept. 28 (9:00 am); and Oct. 10 (6:30 pm)

Bears Tryouts (DOB = 1995):

Sept. 21 (9 am and 3 pm); Oct. 5 (9:00 am)

All tryouts for both teams will be held at Lambrick Park. There is a $20 tryout fee per player that is payable at the first session that the player attends.

New Dugouts and Change Rooms for the LPBA

New dugouts and change rooms will soon be part of our baseball facility at Lambrick Park. The Executive of LPBA was recently notified that funding has been secured to replace our old and undersized dugouts. “We were successful in our application for a Major Capital Project Grant from the BC Government” said LPBA President, Joe Stephenson. “The amount of the grant is $60,000, which is half of the total estimated cost for this project of $120,000.” The plan is for construction to occur later this year during July and August. The new dugouts will be larger than the existing ones and will have running water and electricity. We want the dugouts to be completed in time for our Fall season, which will start right after Labour Day and continue until mid October.

Oak Bay/Gordon Head MLA, Ida Chong, presents LPBA President Joe Stephenson, with a cheque for $60,000 to help pay for new dugouts at the Lambrick Park baseball field.
